An entry to the MBA world requires the candidates to appear for Entrance Exams of which the most popular is CAT or Common Admission Test. The CAT Score allows the candidate to be eligible for most of the best B-Schools in India including the IIMs which hold the CAT Exam.

CAT exam is not that easy as people thinks.The syllabus of CAT directly focus on the logical thinking of a person.Its computer based MBA entrance test for admission in IIMs and other prestigious B-Schools in India.Its conducted every year by the IIMs on a rotational basis generally in last week of November.

Eligibility Criteria of CAT

  • In order to be eligible for the CAT Exam, the candidate has to pass at least their Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% (for General Category and for candidates from the NC-OBC caste).
  • There is no age limit on the CAT Exam according to the CAT Exam Eligibility Criteria.
  • For further admission processes in IIMs, the candidate should maintain a unique and valid email ID as well as phone number for official communications.

Factors Which Disqualify A Candidate

  • If the candidate has not appeared for their bachelor’s degree and is in progress of completing their Professional Degree (CA/CS/ICWA).
  • If the candidate is pursuing both their bachelor’s degree as well as professional degree but has yet to complete both of them.
  • If the graduation is not recognized by the UGC/AICTE/MHRD, the candidate will be considered ineligible to appear for the CAT Exam.

Resevation Of Seats In CAT

the IIMs are government-run institutions which mean that they follow the government policies about reservations for the under-privileged categories.This reservation means that a general category candidate has just over 54% (54.5% to be exact) seats available to him/her. The total number of seats available in the various IIMs is around 4000. With the reservation status as it is, the number of seats available to candidates from the general category is just over 1900. With the addition of 20 or so top Institutions, the General Category candidates have approximately 4000 seats to compete upon.This shows the level of competition for each seat in the top B-Schools for a candidate in the General Category.

Exam Pattern Of CAT

  1. Conducted in the final week of November every year, CAT exam is a national level management entrance test.
  2. The exam pattern of CAT decides by one of the top six IIMs (IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode or IIM Indore).
  3. The CAT 2021 Exam Pattern will constitute 3 sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), Quantitative Ability (QA). The CAT Exam is held as a Computer Based Test (CBT) with duration of 3 hours. According to the CAT 2019 Exam Pattern, Each section of the CAT exam is expected to be allocated 60 minutes and there is no concept of carrying that time forward to other sections.

Overall Analysis of CAT2020

The overall paper was slightly difficult compared to the previous year. A major reason for this is the fact that while the Verbal Ability and DILR section was more difficult than the QA section being easier than made up for it. The overall cut off for the 99%ile decreased to 100-102 in slot 2 and 3 and 105-110 in slot 1 due to the rise in the difficulty level of the overall CAT Paper.
